Accessibility

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, level AA. That is the standard most public bodies in the United States are measured against, and it is a sensible target for a club site.

We have not had an independent audit, so we do not claim to conform. Saying otherwise on this page of all pages would be the wrong thing to do. What follows is what has actually been done and checked.

• Every page is built from real headings in order, with one main heading, so a screen reader can move through it by structure.
• Every image carries alternative text, and images that are purely decorative are marked as such so they are skipped rather than announced.
• Every form field has a label attached to it, and the club’s sign-up forms explain what they will do with what you type before you type it.
• The site can be used with a keyboard alone, and whatever you are on is visibly outlined so you can see where you are.
• Colours come from the Lions Clubs International palette, chosen for contrast against white, and no meaning is carried by colour alone — anything shown in a colour is also said in words.
• Text reflows when you enlarge it, and the pages work down to a narrow phone without anything sliding off the side.
• Nothing moves, flashes or plays on its own, and no page puts you under a time limit.

• Our news photographs have short alternative text. It says what the picture is, not everything in it.
• Documents and newsletters the club sends by email have not been checked to the same standard as the site.
• The members’ area behind sign-in has had less attention than these public pages. If you are a member and something there is hard to use, please tell us — we would rather hear it than have you struggle with it.
• Some things on this site come from other people — a map, an embedded video — and we do not control how accessible those are.

We will also just give you the information another way. If a page is not working for you, a club officer will read it to you over the telephone, send it in whatever format suits, or tell you what you need at a meeting. You should not have to wait for a website to be fixed to find out when the club meets.

We are a volunteer club, so a reply may take a few days — but it will come, and anything that stops somebody using the site goes to the top of the list.
